Chapter One: "Ul'dahn Slump"
One Year Ago...
"Cibus!....Alimento! Do you even have a middle name?..Anyway, when are you gonna get off your lazy arse and make some gil!? The only reason I stay is because we're friends but you haven't paid me in over a month!" Says Cibus' retainer Lisha.
Cibus sits up from his bed, his shaggy blue hair tipped with red highlights frizzled over his eyes as he glances to his old friend sighing. "First off, no I don't. Secondly I'm sorry, lately I've just been in a rut. I mean it's only been two years since I've started adventuring but for some reason it's gotten just not as fulfilling...perhaps I made a mistake starting this lifestyle..." His head lowers as he stares at his feet.
"...Hmph!" Lisha gives Cibus a well weighted uppercut to the chin knocking him down onto the bed. "Then at least find another job! Seven hells, what happened to you!? You not the energetic fighter I knew back at the pugilists guild, you're pathetic...now, unless you desire another thrashing go down to the market strip and find something, anything, I don't care. That is, if you still want me around." Lisha says with a bitter voice as she turns her head away from him.
Cibus swallows the blood that leaked into his mouth from the punch, his chin sore and starting to swell. He sits up again then stands to look at his retainer with a saddened face as he sighs. "I...do, just wait alright. I'll go right now." He says before leaving looking back to his retainer but she stays silent and her back still turned.
The sun bakes the streets of Ul'dah just as much as any other day, as Cibus makes his way to the merchant strip he sees groups of adventurers coming in and out of the quicksand. Smiles on their faces as they walk gallantly, while his is slow and groggy. When he arrives to the strip, it's again filled with adventurers talking and buying with the many merchants. Others crafting and selling they wares, he makes his way to an old friend of his grandfathers. A lalafel named Babato Bito, a sort of broker for jobs around Ul'dah and many other places in Eorzea. Cibus approaches him calmly.
"Hello Babato, I hope you're doing well." He says with a half smile.
"Gods boy what happened to your chin? Uh, knowing what you do it's an obvious answer, so what can I do for you for Cibus? How's Cophinus doing?" The lalafel says with a big smile.
"He's doing well I hope, it's been quite sometime since I've seen grandfather... Anyway, I was wondering if I could get a job from you."
"Uh, I'm no Levemete Cibus, you're gonna have to go to the Quicksand for that."
"No no I mean, a 'Job'."
"Have you given up adventuring boy? That's saddening to hear."
"Heh, I wouldn't say that, call it a break I suppose."
"Well alright then, what are you looking for specifically?"
"Just something that makes decent coinage."
"Well, there is a baron looking for some 'entertainment', looking for both female and male Miqo'te to fit his bill. Use your imagination on that one hehe."
"Er, no, I think I'll pass on that I don't have the stomach for that kind of work and grandfather would be rather upset if he were to know. What else do you have?"
"Hm..fitting your description and skills..." Babato looks through a small notepad. "Any chance you possess Culinarian skills?"
"Cooking? Well grandfather taught me quite an array of culinarian arts alongside with his monk teachings. So I'd like to say yes."
"Well I just so happen to have a job from some sailors in Limsa Lominsa going on a year voyage to the surrounding locations outside of Eorzea, they require a cook with great skill. You'd be feeding about 50 crew members if you were to accept."
"Heh, shouldn't be too hard. I gladly accept."
"Very good, also don't expect a steady voyage. The waters are just as dangerous as land so be ready for any sort conflict and equip yourself accordingly but remember you're not alone my boy. I'll make the arrangements post-haste, be at the Lominsan docks tomorrow and the sailors should take care of everything from there. Good luck me boy!"
"See you around Babato and thank you."
Cibus runs off to Lisha to tell her the good news and starts preparing for the voyage.
