((Writers Note: While I'm still working on Cibus' One Year Journey, I wanted to write some short stories of times with his Grandfather, various events and situations that he'd go through with his stern and loving mentor.))
Setting: Cibus is 15 and currently living with his grandfather Cophinus Alimento on the plains of Thanalan, traveling frequently while being taught the ways of the monk and living the nomadic life.
Cibus awakes once again under the canopy of his grandfathers caravan, his two chocobos feeding on the fresh gysahl greens he gathers every morning for them. The smell of herb eggs and grain gives Cibus more motivation to wake up, he stretches with a yawn and his ears wiggle about hearing the sound of the delicious sizzle. Once his eyes adjust to the bright sun baking the dusty plains he looks upon his grandfather cooking, scooting closer to watch carefully. His grandfather glances to him but then back to his pan on the fire.
"Well good morning Cibus, I assume you slept well son." Cophinus says with his gruff voice still a little focused on the cooking.
"As well as I ever do, eggs again huh?" He says still a little slurred from waking up
"Full of protein and good for ya, you could use a few more pounds boy."
"Yeah I do, but I'll just burn it all off again."
"Nevertheless, we got a big day today so be sure to eat quickly alright?"
"What do you mean? More training I assume..." Cibus groans a little
"Nonsense, we're going swimming today."
"Huh? Swimming? Where? La Noscea? The Shroud?"
"Coerthas."
"Where's that? Is it far?"
"Just past the shroud, in the higher regions. We'll be having a day of fun and relaxation there.
Cibus' eyes widen and a smile spreads across his face to his grandfather, he gets served a large helping of eggs and grain but nearly swallows the whole thing before getting dress for the day. Cophinus reins his chocobo to the caravan and start the trek to Coerthas, passing by the lush forests of the shroud and soon coming upon the snowy plains of Coerthas. Cibus' chatters in the back as his blanket isn't much help for the cold, he then gets the realization of his grandfathers ruse getting a grimace on his face. Passing by a few wild creatures carefully the caravan makes it way a river quite a ways from the neighboring settlements. The only sound Cibus could hear was the running waters and the icy breeze. Cophinus stopped the caravan and went back to fetch Cibus.
"Well, we're here. Isn't it lovely?" Cophinus says with a sly grin.
"Sometimes I wish I had a grandmother that could beat the stuffing out of you" Cibus sighs blowing his red tipped bangs out of his eyes.
"Oh come now, this'll be fun. I promise. Come on, this is very important."
Cibus has no choice but to comply with his grandfather, he wraps himself with the thickest blanket he could find and followed his grandfather to the river. Once there Cophinus removes his clothing, stripping down only to his undergarments, he takes a deep breath and gets into a stance, one unfamiliar to Cibus. He shakes a little, he opens his mouth and breathes out with fog spewing out almost like a smoke stack. The snow at Cophinus' feet melts and as the flakes fall on him they steam away like he's a walking stove. Cibus' eyes widen in shock to the sight as he watches his grandfather walk calming into the cold waters and sits down in the running water in a meditative position. Cophinus looks to his grandson and smiles.
"Now Cibus...what I am gonna teach you will be very important for your days ahead. This is an essential to your body and your spirit, the Fire Chakra. The final elemental Chakra, it's source is your core." Cophinus says patting his torso. "The space between your heart, lungs and stomach. While difficult to fully master, its minimal benefits with combat are substantial. Exerting the full potential of your strength. Like before, it can't coexist with the other elemental chakra lest you destroy your body. Only have one or the other unleashed."
"Hm...so it super charges your body basically, but the cold really doesn't phase you?" Cibus says scratching his head looking to his grandfather.
"Once you get to further understanding it, it heats your body to a rather high temperature trumping practically any cold weather. But this is just showing off nonetheless hehe. But the regular is enough to make this water passable for a warm spring. Now we're gonna be here a while so might as well start with a warm up yes? To get the blood flowing." He says before standing up, grinning to his grandson. Before Cibus could react he feels a sudden burning sensation his temple, a sizzle rings out as he is launched away from the river and our of his blanket. He winces to the fist shaped burn on his face before getting up in stance unsheathing his hora, he unleashes his wind chakra knowing he'll have to dodge a lot in this practice fight. His grandfather continues his assault with a hard bootshine, although Cibus can easily dodge them his grandfathers fists still graze him occasionally with the burns feeling just as unpleasant.
"You can do better that boy! Come on!" Cophinus taughts as he continues to give his grandson a hard time.
"Damn right I can! Oryahhh!" Cibus retaliates back with a combo of punches and kicks only to be blocked by Cophinus. He struggles to keep his hora steady as the his strength no where meets his grandfathers but before jumping back his legs get locked and is swiftly lifted and thrown towards the freezing river creating a big splash. It's freezing and the cold angers Cibus even more so after being thrown. He tries his best to stand the but the outburst and cold water drains his stamina increasingly til he can't move.
Cophinus sighs to his raging grandson. "There you go getting angry again, remember you need to be calm with your opponent. They could very well use that anger to their advantage." Cophinus carries Cibus out of the river and back to the caravan where he starts a fire to warm his grandsons freezing body.
Cibus slowly sits up still wet and chilled to the bone but the fire helps to an extent, burns and bruises on his face. He sighs heavily as he watches the fire. He then feels a hand pat him on the head.
"Still got a ways to go but you're progressing well. Perhaps next we should work on getting that fire chakra unlocked hehe." He chuckles.
"Achoo!! Ugh..yeah, sounds like a plan...anything to remedy this damned cold." Cibus groans.
After getting something hot in their bellies Cibus and Cophinus return to the running river, ready to start the process of unlocking fire chakra. His grandfather pulls out a bottle out of his rucksack and tosses it to Cibus. "Now son, though you may be a little too young to start drinking this stuff regularly it's good example of how this chakra feels, take one drink and no more. Understand?" Cibus uncorks the bottle and sniffs wondering what the liquid is, he takes a drink of it. It's very sweet but have a light tartness to it, one he swallows he feels a burning sensation in his stomach but nothing unpleasant he ponders what his grandfathers intention of this is.
"That's...interesting, I expected you to get dizzy boy. It's the strongest stuff I have and even after a couple drinks it gets me buzzed quickly. Hm, well in any case I want you focus on the sensation in your stomach. Let it guide your body to unleashing the chakra, take deep breathes and move your body to the rhythm of the heat, when it peaks, when it drags and when it lessens. Once it fades try to recreate it yourself by channeling aether only then will it blossom into chakra. Then lastly shift the energy up through your body to create a flow between your vital organs. Heart, Lungs and etc." Cibus then goes into stance closing his eyes, moving along with the burn in his stomach, shifting back and forth taking deep breathes. Getting aggressive when the burn does, slowing down as well but soon notices it's gone, once that happens he clenches his fists and presses them against his stomach. He feels the aether swirling inside him, he stirs it faster and faster creating a friction. He lets out a breathe, steam flows out in large amounts from his lips but suddenly a sharp pain pierces his insides.
"Cibus stop!!" His grandfather yells out.
"Gwahck!" Cibus yelps as he coughs up blood staggering to his knees gasping for air, his eyes water from the intense pain. He stops channeling aether and tries to stand up staggering slightly.
"By the twelve, you did a little too much boy. And that was only your stomach, you have to try transferring that energy throughout so you don't turn your stomach into an oven. Now try again, but this time spread that aether alright?"
Cibus pants a little but nods to grandfather gritting his teeth and then repeating the process again, trying his best to shift the aether throughout his torso, he sweats a little feeling the heat reach his all over inside him. As the pain emerges once again he bites his bottom lip hard getting the flow to steady after quite some time of struggle Cibus hears a loud crash within him. He opens his eyes and looks around, the stillness of the snow and the breeze hitting his skin but his body is warm, the snow that falls and the winds no longer feel cold to him. He lets out a breathe and steam once again pours out thick but not in large amounts like before. His grandfathers bursts into laughter.
"Hahaha! You did it son, and on your second try. Although it may take a while to fully master it, you make me proud indeed. How does it feel?" He says with a smile on his face
"Like...it's sunny day in Gridania, I feel..warm." Cibus says before picking up some snow but it quickly melts in his palm.
"That is the key to this chakra, it's get your blood pumping to a point when it energizes your muscles. That is what creates the heat and makes you stronger. So, you think you can land some hits this time?"
Cibus smirks at Cophinus and gets into stance ready to spar once again.
"Come at me with everything, with that burning will of yours!! Make me proud!!" Cophinus taunts loudly.
"Right!" Cibus says before dashing forward confidently.
4 Years Later...
Cibus returns to the spot where he unlocked the fire chakra years ago, the icy land of Coerthas. Removing his clothes down to his undergarments, he concentrates on that sensation of heat, unleashing his chakra. Breathing out thick steam and his body burning up, the snow melting at his footsteps as he walking into the running waters sitting down in a meditative position. He thinks of the past and feels at peace, as a few tears leave his eyes.
"Hmph..." He smiles to himself.
