*The folder, like its ilk before it, is stuffed to the brim with papers, sketches, some (expended) arcane trinkets, and, oddly enough, a few chocobo feathers*
Good day to whomever may reading it, but this is report is focused around a project I have dubbed "Umbral Facets" In the following pages, you will have a full list and understanding of the workings of, and efforts therein, pertaining to the creation of a theoretical object known as an Umbral Crystal. I will endeavor to make this as detailed and elegant as possible, so please peruse the contents at your discretion.
*Following a length table of contents, the first page is a page with three sketches, a crystal shard, full elemental crystal, and a cluster.*
Before any given analysis can begin, we must first ask what is the goal of this research. Elemental crystals are an important element of our day to day life and are utilized in many things we take for granted. We use fire shards to heat up our food, wind crystals to moderate temperature, and water crystals to purify some of our drinks. Many smiths and tailors (see page 21a, Khala) would be unable to produce much of what we use in both martial or social environments, and the quality or purity of the crystal(s) in question matters. My goal is to create one (cluster preferred) of the umbral element so that our resident conservator(s) can begin to test their uses.
*The next page shows a diagram of the ground, arrows pointing at a rock outcropping, then various stages for crystal creation*
Crystal creation is a process we know a little about, but pertains to inherent elemental energies slowly filling a given rock of the appropriate element. To wit, imagine an eye of water underneath a pond. Over time, the latent aetheric energy of the pond will flow into the eye, "awakening" it and infusing it fully. While we have never fully observed the process, it seems obvious due to the locations of many shards or crystals and their given surroundings.
*The next page is, oddly, a sketch of a book cover. The book is titled "The Umbral Crystal: Myth or Mystery?"*
The process was originally thought of because of a book that was originally found within the Thaumaturge's Guild in Ul'dah (see page 63f) but was removed from the Archives most likely through theft (see page 63g). Investigation began when Votarist Cibus was informed of its location and the Ul'dah markets were explored. Later, Bulwark Keleth would hear of a cultist of the Lambs of Dalamud (see page 33a) confess under duress that a copy of the book was located in the depths of Amdapor Keep "behind the demon wall." Before an expedition could be mounted, Votarist U'faeylyn was able to locate a copy (see page 64a) of the book within Haukke Manor during an unrelated expedition. Multiple copies are irrelevant, but may be good to control should such a creation be possible.
*The next page is a diagram of a female person standing on a patch of dirt. Arrows designate a circular fashion, from the air, to the person, to a circle that looks like a rock, then back out.*
While the book talks at length about theory, mythology, and potential use (see subsection C), the potential methods of creating an umbral crystal mirror what we know about elemental crystals. A pure form of umbral, or black, magic is infused into an appropriate elemental rock or gem, at which point the crystal will be made. Unfortunately, despite how simple this sounds, the book speaks at length about 14 different failures using the given method. These failures have resulted in: Localized explosions, Umbral Poisoning (see page 12b), Voidsent Summons, Voidsent contracts, insanity, and death.
One of the consistent points of failure within the process seems to be a lack of purifying element as well as a poor choice of location when the ritual begins. While it is possible to create an element purifier, such an object may be out of the realms of this project. Instead, I have opted to utilize myself for a stabilizing element. Because everyone is born attuned to a given element, and I know of my own personal affinity, I hold some level of "pure" umbral energy within myself. In addition, I have scouted out three locations where the ritual may be best: Mor Dhona (during a gloom), Amdapor Keep basements, and Haukke Manor. Each of these has a sufficient amount of umbral energy in the air to regulate how much I have to force from myself as well as to grant a better chance at creating a stronger/bigger crystal.
*The next few pages talk at length about theory, aetheric control, and aetheric output. Following that is a page labelled "Dangers"*
Because of the inherent danger behind this, it works best to label a few dangers. An expedition was planned to Amdapor Keep, but after consulting with Ser Raurimont, we have arranged instead a testing session within the Mor Dhona plains during a gloom. This document will be updated with further dangers upon the conclusion of the test, however, I will endeavor to list all I can. Solutions are listed within the parenthesis.
* Danger to ritualist: Insanity/Umbral Poisoning (Ritualist will have all four limbs tied and a rope around the neck to silence. Esuna may be administered)
* Danger to ritualist: Explosion (Armor has been enchanted/engineered to resist explosions)
* Danger to guards: Explosion (Not an issue unless straying too close. Keep distance).
* Danger to all: Potential wild monster/Garlean attack (Weapons/Oversight can protect against this, provided by Thel)
* Danger to all: Voidsent summon? (See above)
* Danger to all: Unaspected crystal interference (Relocate into Garlean castrum/outskirts. See two above)
When we have concluded this experiment, we will have a better grasp of the process and dangers. Report will be updated following that.
