There's a couple simple courtesies that new and old role-players should be aware of to make this a positive experience for everyone. I've compiled a short and sweet list here for your viewing pleasure. I urge everyone to give this a look and more importantly; a ponder.
1) What is said in-Character stays in-Character
Often times people will get too emotionally invested in their character and become upset themselves if they feel their character has become slighted. It's an imaginary world with imaginary people and your happiness (as a real person) is number one. Plain and simple.
2) Godmodding/Powerplaying
Simply put, you are trying to take control of another character and their actions. This is generally frowned upon in most RP communities and can cause issues between players. In an effort to avoid this just ask yourself; "Is my post going to give the other player adequate time to react to the situation?"
3) Using another player's character without permission
This may seem obvious but you should not and cannot write about another player character dying, or making sweet love to your character without their permission. If you want to use a player character in your story get their permission first!
4) Metagaming
Essentially this is when you use Out-of-Character knowledge In-Character. Example; Another player tells you that so and so is getting engaged, your character doesn't know this but you do. You then use this information in your next RP even though there is no way your character would know about it.
5) Am I Feasible?
When considering the backstory of your character ask yourself if it makes sense. I've run into a couple people that were RPing as 'primals'. Unfortunately that cannot feasibly work in this world. Primals need to exist in areas with high aether density, and often use 'tempered' people to carry out their bidding and worship them. Far be it for me to tell people what they should play but I urge all roleplayers to research into their concept before coming to a decision as certain unrealistic concepts can put roleplayers' hackles up.
This is a really nice link on Courtesy, Communication & Compromise
